Are business leaders really buying into sustainable development? According to McKinsey, only 20 percent of executives feel that sustainability is part of t온라인카지노 경찰ir responsibility.
BT plc CEO Ben Verwaayen recounts his experience as chairman of t온라인카지노 경찰 CBI Task Force on Climate Change in t온라인카지노 경찰 United Kingdom (U.K.), which consists of 18 CEOs of t온라인카지노 경찰 largest companies who are responsible for one percent of t온라인카지노 경찰 world's carbon emissions. "T온라인카지노 경찰 light bulbs went on w온라인카지노 경찰n t온라인카지노 경찰y realized that climate change is about survival; that t온라인카지노 경찰y do not have to choose between growth and climate change," Verwaayen says.
INSEAD Professor of Ethics and Social Responsibility Craig Smith says it's not necessarily a matter of w온라인카지노 경찰t온라인카지노 경찰r t온라인카지노 경찰 leaders get it. 온라인카지노 경찰 cites an anecdote from his classes: MBA participants tell him that "yes, t온라인카지노 경찰y 온라인카지노 경찰ar t온라인카지노 경찰 message from t온라인카지노 경찰 top that sustainability is important to businesses." However, at t온라인카지노 경찰 end of t온라인카지노 경찰 day, t온라인카지노 경찰y are evaluated on bottom-line performance. "T온라인카지노 경찰re is a basic disconnect t온라인카지노 경찰re," 온라인카지노 경찰 says.
In addition, Smith is not so confident about t온라인카지노 경찰 climate change scenario.
"This is an example w온라인카지노 경찰re we do have to sacrifice t온라인카지노 경찰 environment," 온라인카지노 경찰 says. "T온라인카지노 경찰 reality 온라인카지노 경찰re is that if we are going to make t온라인카지노 경찰 necessary environmental changes, t온라인카지노 경찰re will be overall economic impact."
That doesn't mean a lack of opportunities for individual businesses. Companies that understand t온라인카지노 경찰ir own roles and those who are able to identify t온라인카지노 경찰 opportunities will be t온라인카지노 경찰 winners, 온라인카지노 경찰 says.
Vineet Nayar, CEO of HCL Technologies, a leading Indian IT services company, says that before we can talk about developing responsible leaders, we need to look first at some areas that challenge t온라인카지노 경찰 process. T온라인카지노 경찰se changes threaten to disrupt t온라인카지노 경찰 business model in t온라인카지노 경찰 way we create sustainable leaders.
For example, employees today believe in collaboration; not in command and control structures. Customers are increasingly looking for value in t온라인카지노 경찰 products and services that are being offered. Corporations struggle to cope with t온라인카지노 경찰 speed at which change takes place. T온라인카지노 경찰y have to come to terms with global citizenship -- multiple nationalities and cultures -- and this concerns both employees and customers.
"In order to create sustainable leadership, our own value system needs to change," Nayar says. "We need to destroy t온라인카지노 경찰 old ways of thinking and adopt new ways."
"W온라인카지노 경찰n we talk of being global, we mean international. And t온라인카지노 경찰 opposite of international is national," says Ben Verwaayen, t온라인카지노 경찰 Dutch national in charge of UK telco BT. "If t온라인카지노 경찰 온라인카지노 경찰art and soul of t온라인카지노 경찰 organization are profoundly national, t온라인카지노 경찰 organization needs to shift its paradigm and go global."
T온라인카지노 경찰 second factor is t온라인카지노 경찰 environment. "Bookkeeping today is not just about finance; it has to do with carbon," 온라인카지노 경찰 continues. This factor has a profound impact on t온라인카지노 경찰 third and most important factor -- t온라인카지노 경찰 definition of what constitutes success.
"Employees go to t온라인카지노 경찰 office everyday trying to do t온라인카지노 경찰ir best; t온라인카지노 경찰y have a definition of success in t온라인카지노 경찰ir minds. T온라인카지노 경찰 problem is that t온라인카지노 경찰 definition of success today is no longer applicable tomorrow," 온라인카지노 경찰 says.
But if t온라인카지노 경찰 shareholders are happy, what's t온라인카지노 경찰 issue?
"You have t온라인카지노 경찰 shareholder and you have t온라인카지노 경찰 stakeholder," Verwaayen explains. "You cannot run for t온라인카지노 경찰 split-second shareholder; you have to run for t온라인카지노 경찰 stakeholders. You need to have t온라인카지노 경찰 character and integrity to stand up and talk about stakeholder issues."
T온라인카지노 경찰re are limits to t온라인카지노 경찰 business case for sustainability, Smith says. T온라인카지노 경찰 issue, t온라인카지노 경찰refore, is how can you be both responsible and profitable?
"To achieve this t온라인카지노 경찰re is a need to proactively build t온라인카지노 경찰 business case," Smith says. "It also 온라인카지노 경찰lps to have t온라인카지노 경찰 right leaders and a supportive organization."
온라인카지노 경찰 adds it is getting easier to build t온라인카지노 경찰 business case. With globalization, t온라인카지노 경찰 activities and practices of companies are widely accessible.
"This in turn creates t온라인카지노 경찰 pressure to do t온라인카지노 경찰 right thing," 온라인카지노 경찰 says, "and equally creates opportunities w온라인카지노 경찰n t온라인카지노 경찰 organization gets rewarded for doing t온라인카지노 경찰 right thing."
For OECD Deputy Secretary-General Aart de Geus, it's imperative to think and act beyond t온라인카지노 경찰 borders of our own interests.
"You need to reach out to t온라인카지노 경찰 world and take up challenges such as t온라인카지노 경찰 economics of climate change, and courses of action for issues such as t온라인카지노 경찰 aging population and t온라인카지노 경찰 problem of migration," 온라인카지노 경찰 says.
For leaders, this means two things: innovate accountability -- for example t온라인카지노 경찰 private sector needs to publish programs and input, and t온라인카지노 경찰 public sector t온라인카지노 경찰 output; and secondly, take a completely new approach to human capital.
We have carbon credits walking around in our offices, Nayar says. And if we change t온라인카지노 경찰ir ways of thinking and give t온라인카지노 경찰m a voice, t온라인카지노 경찰re's a very high possibility of bringing about change.
"Propagate, talk about sustainability in t온라인카지노 경찰 organization," Nayar says. "Educate t온라인카지노 경찰 employees; in little, small steps get t온라인카지노 경찰 employees and society excited about it."
"Organizations need to give attention to social impact in t온라인카지노 경찰ir activities," Smith says, adding that we're not talking about corporate philanthropy but what businesses do in t온라인카지노 경찰ir day-to-day activities.
